The ADTRAN
®
ACT 1900 is an intelligent
D4 channel bank intended for central
office (CO) installations where intelligence,
low-cost commonality of channel units,and
high reliability are desired. Based on industry
standard D4 technology, the ACT 1900 accom-
modates a wide variety of low-cost channel
units from numerous suppliers. Intelligent
ADTRAN channel units, which provide DS0
performance monitoring and remote provi-
sioning capabilities, complement the
advanced functionality of the ACT 1900.
The ACT 1900 benefits from a reduced
common equipment section consisting of
only three common units: Bank Controller
Unit (BCU), Line Interface Unit (LIU), and
Power Supply Unit (PSU). The BCU is an
intelligent controller for the bank providing
non-intrusive communications to the channel
units, control of the multiple communications
ports, and storage of alarm, provisioning, and
performance information. The communica-
tions ports consist of a local craft interface
for terminal control, a modem access port,
and an RS-485 interface to the ADTRAN Site
Manager for management of multiple banks.
Enhancing the control and maintainability
of the ACT 1900, the ADTRAN Site Manager
provides centralized management for as
many as 500 channel banks. It is a low cost,
Network Equipment Building Standard (NEBS)
compliant, VME-based computer, which
connects to the ACT 1900s over a two-wire,
addressable RS-485 communications link.
The Site Manager also provides an interface
to various Operations Support Systems (OSS)
such as Bellcores NMA and OPS/INE for
alarm reporting, trouble isolation, and flow-
through provisioning of intelligent ADTRAN
channel units. Several protocols and connec-
tions are available for flexibility and network
integration including TL1, SNMP, and an
internal X.25 interface for WAN management.
The ACT 1900 monitors both the DS1
performance as well as the DS0 performance
at the channel unit level. ADTRAN intelligent
Performance Monitoring, or PM, channel
units monitor the performance of the local
loop to the customer’s equipment and non-
intrusively report the data collected to the
BCU for storage for a maximum of seven days.
The PM units are also provisionable either
locally or remotely using the BCU craft inter-
face and Site Manager, respectively. Six
intelligent PM units are available: OCU
DP/PM, DS0 DP/PM, U-BR1TE PM, E&M/TO
PM, FXO/DPT PM, AND FXS/DPO PM. The
DS0 performance information consists of
parameters such as error performance, signal
level, open-loop condition, and channel unit
alarm or out-of-service condition.
